Sunrise period for .me domains till May 20

15 05 2008

The sunrise registration period for the newly launched .me domain names, the generic top-level domain of the country of Montenegro, is on till May 20 and companies having their company names and product names as registered trademarks can book them before the registrations are open for all on a first come first served basis.

The .me registry claims to have received thousands of domain name registrations in the first week of the announcement of the availability of the .me domains.

The sunrise applicants include companies Apple, which registered apple.me, ipod.me and itunes.me. Microsoft, Skype, Digg, MTV and BMW have also registered their .me domain names.

I have my reservations about this pricey domain name, available from 110 to 200 Euros per year for a minimum of five years, which is predicted to be very popular.

With that kind of money being involved, not very many domainers would like to register too many domains. What do you guys say? :-)

The .me domain names are very expensive and I doubt that someone on a tight budget can afford many .me domain names.

But, there are also domain.co.me and domain.its.me available for residents of Montenegro.

What is your opinion on these domains, how much could domains like hello.its.me, click.its.me, over.co.me and similar be worth?

Looking forward to hear your opinion!

HI Zuka,

Even though the domains like hello.its.me, click.its.me look delicious, I doubt if they will be worth a lot of money any time in near future. If you take a close look at the domain name sales trends, it is the .com domain that rules the roost in terms of final sale price and .co.uk has only recently shown a healthy upward trend.

So, if you are looking for some quick money, don’t invest in too many of the 3rd level .me domains. However, if you are in for a longer haul, say a minimum of 10 years or so, may be these domains will become popular enough to score you a 10 figure sale.

Even in that case, just holding a domain and hoping it appreciates in value won’t do much good. A better strategy would be to develop the domains and offer some name related services like hello.its.me = internet telephony or VoIP services and click.its.me = advertising or affiliates or networking site.

Hope my inputs were somewhat helpful to you!

Best of luck and thanks for the compliment on my blog :)

Thank you for your response!

I must say that I did invest some money in 3rd level .me domain names, but I don’t think that I invested that much money – around 2500 euros. (for around 150 domain names, reserved for 2 years)

I agree that domain names of that kind are not going to reach sky high prices right away, but they are definitely very profitable on the long run. Development of name related services is a must and it will consume most of my time in the following months.

With a right strategy and discipline, the investment will be returned in no time.

Determination, discipline and commitment are essential in any type of business, if you are ready to follow your dream, then you can over.co.me any obstacle ;)

Best of luck!

I’m sorry for posting another comment, but I forgot to mention this – domains like First_name.its.me are going to be very popular (the most popular name in the world is Mohammad – I think that site with that name could generate a lot of organic search traffic ;) )

Do you think that traffic from search engines originating from first name (or full name) searches can be profitable? (my guess is – yes, having in mind the prices of derek.com, marylin.com etc which are sold for over $50.000 and contain )
